Cycle

Cycle is a new creation by Þyri Huld Árnadottir. The work is created in collaboration with Iceland Dance Company, composer Urður Hákonardóttir, costume and set designer Júlíanna Lára Steingrímsdóttir and the photographer Saga Sigurðardóttir who creates the video installation in the work.

Cycle is a dance performance that honours the woman’s body.

The work combines art, music and dance to form a single entity.

We are all in the same cycle, plants, animals and humans.

A seed & water become a flower.

Egg & sperm become a human being.

A woman bears the child, brings it into the world and nourishes it.

The body undergoes changes, which can be demanding for most women.

We need to love our bodies always, no matter if they are fat, skinny, long, small, ripped or smooth.

We all live in a cycle.

Þyri Huld Árnadóttir won the Icelandic Performing Arts Award for “Best Dancer” in 2015 and 2018 for her roles in Sin og Fortuneville. She started her career with the Iceland Dance Company in 2010 and has participated in various projects as a dancer and choreographer since then. Þyri has composed three works about the superheroes Óð and Flex in collaboration with Hannes Þór Egilsson 2014-2018, which received nominations as “Best Children’s Performance” and “Best Choreography” at the Icelandic Performing Arts Awards.

The piece is supported by the Performing Arts Council (Sviðslistarráð) and is produced in collaboration with The Iceland Dance Company.

Premieres on February 3rd, 2023 at the Reykjavik City Theatre.
