Njála is a bold new Icelandic stage production inspired by Brennu-Njáls saga, one of the most beloved and enduring works in Icelandic literature. For over 700 years, this saga has lived in the hearts of the Icelandic people, studied in every secondary school and arguably more popular today than ever before. This sweeping tale chronicles how Iceland became a nation, with legendary characters like Gunnar, Skarphéðinn, Njáll, Hallgerður, and Bergþóra whose stories have shaped Iceland’s cultural identity. Mythic, tragic, and fiercely human, these figures are woven into the very fabric of the national psyche. The performance is produced in collaboration with the Icelandic Dance Company under the direction of Þorleifur Arnar Arnarsson and Erna Ómarsdóttir, choreographer and dancer. They will pull out all the stops and use the limitless magic of the theatre to explore this magnificent story from various perspectives in a performance that will be at once curious, challenging, and a colorful theatrical feast.
The Njála Festival begins in the lobby of Borgarleikhúsið one hour before each performance at 6:00 PM, featuring various activities. Visitors can borrow costumes, get tattoos, meet actors roaming around, buy meat soup, watch live broadcasts of actors in hair and makeup, and observe the preparations on the Main Stage. Additionally, there will be a lecture about Njála at 7:00 PM.
Premiere on December 30th on the Main Stage.
