The Iceland Dance Company – IDC – produces and presents contemporary dance and performance, aiming at creating and maintaining people‘s interest in dance; its conceptual and aesthetic potential.
Using its wide-ranging network and international contacts, the company provides an important platform for the development of new work and innovative dance practices – on local as well as on an international level.
About us:
The Iceland Dance Company is Iceland's only state-run dance company, based at the Reykjavík City Theatre. Since 2015, the company enjoys the artistic direction and leadership of visionary choreographer Erna Ómarsdóttir who has transformed the IDC into a hotbed of contemporary choreography. Her specific interest in and focus on interdisciplinary working methods, an overall cross-pollination of the art-forms – including collaborations with composers of new music (e.g. SigurRós, Ben Frost, Anna Þorvaldsdóttir) and visual artists such as Matthew Barney, Gabriela Friðriksdóttir and Ragnar Kjartansson– have secured the IDC a place among of Europe‘s most cutting edge dance companies. This strong reputation is also a direct result of the company members‘ commitment. It is the diverse and versatile ensemble of excellent dancers and performers, who all play an active part in the creation of new work, that helps cement IDC‘s position, bringing the company to venues around the world, such as the Southbank Centre in London, the Onassis Centre in Athens or the Civic Centre Theatre in Hong Kong.
We also feel great responsibility towards our dancers. Thus, ensemble members have been encouraged to make their own work with the company. The encouragement has resulted in many excellent creations in recent years (e.g. „Ball“, „Cycle“, „Geigengeist“). With our international internship-programme, the IDC also encourages a responsible transition for young dancers into a professional environment.
The IDC is the main player in dance and choreography in Iceland and we take our audience seriously. The company lays great emphasis on diversity and proximity to the public. As part of our public outreach programme, the IDCs organizes and takes part in festivals, workshops, artist talks and seminars. The IDC also produces work in public space, in galleries and museums.
